What Not To Do During A Divorce

DivorceSigns

If you’re going through a divorce, you know how frustrating the process can be. It’s so expensive and if you make one mistake, it can be even more costly.

Therefore, you need to know how to do your divorce the right way. Your lawyer may tell you the things you should be doing. There are a lot of things you should avoid doing as well. Take a look at our list.

Don’t Add on More Debt

You may be in a hurry to make big purchases and add on more debt, since it is assumed that the debt will be split in a divorce. Well, that’s not how it works. You will likely be given a financial restraining order and if you disobey that order (by taking on more debt), then you could get in trouble. You will likely be ordered to pay off that debt on your own.

Don’t Use the Kids as Pawns

If you have children, avoid using them as bargaining chips in the divorce. This could cause a lot of stress to your children as well as damage your relationship with them. The courts frown upon manipulating children in a divorce, so if they find out what you have done, you can bet that your spouse will make sure you get punished.

Don’t Hide Assets

In high asset divorces, one party may try to hide assets from the other spouse to keep them from getting split. This is not a good idea. Forensic accountants can help uncover any hidden assets. If you get caught, this is considered a crime and you could get punished with jail time. So be upfront and honest from the start.

Don’t Say Things You’ll Regret

Anything you say can and will be used against you. If it’s in writing — such as an email or text  — that can be used as evidence. You don’t want to paint yourself in a negative light during a divorce. So while it may be hard to bite your tongue and refrain from saying nasty things about your spouse, you need to try hard to choose your words carefully if you want the best outcome in your divorce.

Don’t Use Social Media

Avoid using social media during divorce. You don’t need to air your dirty laundry on Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, or any other social media site. You need to be aware that lawyers and investigators are watching your every move. They can see your posts and they can be shared with others. Any photos or text about your ex or children can and will be used against you. Divorce is complicated enough and social media makes it even worse, so keep all comments to yourself. You don’t need to post them on the world wide web for the whole world to see.

Seek Legal Help

Divorces can be complex situations and if you’ve never been through one, you may be unsure what to do. Avoid mistakes that can negatively affect your outcome.
