Should You Mention Your Divorce on LinkedIn?

Divorce3

In the past, there was a stigma attached to divorce. Nobody wanted to discuss it. People who were going through a divorce kept it quiet and often struggled in silence.

That is no longer the case. We are now in the 21st century, where it seems as though all aspects of a person’s life are on display through social media. As a society, we have become too comfortable sharing personal details of our lives, from our weddings to children’s births to vacations to sex lives and even divorces.

Divorce happens in roughly 50% of marriages. If it happens to you, how much would you share about it? Would you put it on your resume or LinkedIn account?

An advertising executive did. He was the director of brand innovation at Saatchi & Saatchi until his divorce ruined his performance and got him fired. His divorce, which he called “an unpaid job with unreasonable hours,” was like a part-time gig. He devoted 20 hours a week to the divorce process, particularly the mountains of paperwork. His divorce was rough, causing him so much stress and anxiety that he was self-medicating.

The man’s divorce was finalized five years ago. He is now a freelance executive creative director, but just recently, he decided to list his divorce as a job on LinkedIn. He lists his title as “Divorcee” and his employer “The State of California.” He states he worked part-time on his divorce from August 2017 to January 2019 – 17 months. The man lists his skills as time management, anger management, financial planning, endurance training, and law.

The man highlighted his divorce to see what the reaction would be. He thought of it as a way to increase his chances of getting hired or at least increase his network. He did say that fellow divorcees started messaging him. He claims that divorced people have certain skills that non-divorced people have. He also states that if he were hiring, he would pick the divorced person every time.

However, most people don’t think that posting your divorce online is a good idea, even if it has been finalized. Posting such a sensitive topic online can bring about controversy, anger, confrontation, and other negativity.

The problem with social media is that many people use it to feed their need for significance. Yes, there may be the instant buzz of attention, but once that dies off, you are left with a very public revelation about your life. If you have children, they may not be too happy about it either.
