Divorce Parties on the Rise
People have parties to celebrate birthdays, weddings, graduations, and other major life events and milestones. In the past, nobody would even dare to celebrate a divorce, but times have changed. In fact, divorce parties reached an all-time high in 2023.
Why would someone celebrate a divorce? Marriage is something to be taken seriously. It requires a lot of effort from both parties. When one party doesn’t put in enough effort, it leads to resentment.
Our wedding vows say to stay married “until death do us part.” However, that could be a long time for someone who marries in their 20s or 30s. Being with the same person for 50 years or longer can be dreadful, especially if you can’t stand to be around that person anymore.
While divorce can be an emotional process, it can also be liberating. Being single again and having freedom has its advantages. For some, getting divorced is the hardest decision they have ever had to make, so celebrating it is a good way to release some tension, have fun, and start a new chapter in their lives.
Many people seem to think so. According to Evite, a social planning website that handles invitations, divorce party invites reached an all-time high last year. The increase shows that more people are recognizing non-traditional milestones such as divorce. Instead of moping around and feeling sorry for themselves, they are using celebrations to transform life transitions into positive experiences,
Statistics show that 55% of couples stay in bad marriages too long. Marriage itself is not as alluring as it used to be. More than 70% of adults say that having a career you enjoy is important to having a fulfilling life. Only 23% say the same of marriage.
It is mainly women who throw divorce parties. When it comes to marriage, women tend to get shafted. Societal pressure often corners women into unsuccessful marriages, and they are, as a result, more likely to stay in a situation that isn’t great for them.
Divorce parties can prove that this is a decision you take pride in. It can be therapeutic for a lot of people, especially if they stayed in a bad marriage much longer than they should have.
Some common themes or elements of a divorce party might include:
- Symbolic acts. Some parties feature symbolic acts, like burning old wedding photos or destroying a wedding dress.
- Decorations. There are often themed decorations like “new beginnings” or even humorous items like broken heart motifs or mock wedding cakes.
- Activities. Guests might engage in fun activities and games, often with a humorous or cathartic tone.
