Can Counseling Save My Marriage?

CoupleDiscussion

Marriage is tough. It’s supposed to be a partnership where two people work together toward common goals. It’s an institution where the parties grow, both individually and as a couple.

But this doesn’t always happen. Maintaining a relationship is not easy and often requires a little (or a lot of) help. That’s where counseling comes in.

If your marriage is struggling, couples therapy can be the difference between spending many more years together or filing for divorce. So if your marriage is on the line, know that couples therapy positively impacts 70% of couples. The odds are good that your marriage will benefit from it.

Marriage counseling is a type of joint counseling. It is considered to be the most difficult therapy to undertake, especially when couples are angry or hurt and treat the therapy as a way to prove their partner wrong. “

That is not the purpose of marriage therapy. It is meant to help couples understand and resolve conflicts and give them the tools to communicate with more compassion. Couples also learn how to solve problems and deal with conflict in a healthy manner.

However, if you are having problems in your marriage, you should seek therapy quickly. It’s best for couples to enter counseling within two years of the onset of their problems. Unfortunately, though, most couples wait until they are emotionally exhausted from the turmoil in their marriage. By this point, the counseling is rendered ineffective.

Signs You Need Counseling

It’s best to know the signs that your marriage is failing and counseling should be an option. Here are some signs to look for:

  • The communication is so poor that you and your spouse are unable to agree on anything.
  • You and your spouse constantly fight or bicker.
  • You and your spouse cannot compromise or solve problems together.
  • You have problems trusting your spouse.
  • You feel a lack of physical or emotional connection with your spouse.
  • You and your spouse are having issues with sex or not having sex at all.
  • You disagree about goals and lifestyle (such as money and kids).
  • Your partner has engaged in infidelity.
  • You are experiencing more difficult days together than peaceful days

If you are experiencing any of the issues listed above, try to see if your spouse is receptive to counseling. Let them know that you think they could benefit from some outside input. You should stress to your partner that you two don’t need to navigate life’s problems on your own. There is help available.

Seek Legal Help
